"The Boat House"
private property

location:  Milwaukee
theme home

"The neighborhood's most noteworthy landmark is the Edmund B., a house on the corner of Cambridge and Hampshire that is fashioned like a boat.  It was built in 1926 by Edmund B. Gustorf, a traveling salesman and the son of a Finnish sailor. He never sailed professionally but dreamed of adventure on the high seas. The 72-foot, one-bedroom house is made from plans for an actual ship. A fireplace stands where the boiler room would be in a ship."

World's Largest Four-Faced Clock

location:  Milwaukee
record holder

"The Allen Bradley Clocktower is one of Milwaukee’s most recognizable landmarks. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Allen Bradley Clock as the largest four-faced clock in the world. It is actually four separate clocks. Each of the octagonal clock faces is nearly twice the size of the clocks on London’s Big Ben Tower. Each hour hand is 15 feet 9 inches long and weighs 490 pounds. Each minute hand is 20 feet long and weighs 530 pounds. Hour markings on each face are four feet high. The clock serves as an official navigation aid and is so designated on the maps of the United States Coast Guard."

St. Joan of Arc Chapel

location:  Milwaukee
historic structure

"Originally built in the French village of Chasse during the mid 15th century, this small Gothic Chapel was brought to the U.S. in 1927 as a centerpiece to a New York Estate. In the early 1960's the estate was acquired by a Wisconsin family who donated the chapel to Marquette University. Statue of Gertie the Duck

location:  Milwaukee
notable fowl

In 1945, a mallard duck was found nesting on a piling under the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge.  The bridge was scheduled for replacement, but construction was halted as the city waited for the duck, named 'Gertie', to hatch her eggs.  Gertie became famous as the Milwaukee Journal wrote 37 stories about her, and she even appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine.  Now a six-foot statue of her stands where she once sat.

The nightclub inside the building has changed names from "The Ladybug Club" to "618 on Water", which renders the decorative oversized insects pointless, yet there they remain.  Perhaps they can be viewed as a monument to the endless struggle Wisconsinites are faced with, pertaining to the infestation of japanese beetles, aka "the 11th plague", in their homes.
Tip: use a piece of duct tape to pick up all those little putrid-orange-fluid-squirting bastards.  Then simply wad the tape up with a sadistic grin and throw it away.

Milwaukee-Speak
