J.D. Finnegans Tavern
Site of Visit from Carrie Nation

 

location:  Fond du Lac
historic site

      


Carrie (sometimes spelled "Carry") Nation paid a visit to the Schmidt Sample Room (now J.D. Finnegans) in 1902 while in town to deliver a speech on prohibition.  She used a concealed hatchet to smash a bottle of whiskey that was brought to her.  The weapon was wrestled away from her, but she retained her reputation as a Bar Room Smasher.

These two figures once stood in front of Steenberg Homes in Marinette County, now gracing a similar environment.  The two oversize animals were last seen on Honeysuckle Lane near the east side of the property.

Mush's Chair
at Blakley Museum at Galloway Village

This larger-than-normal armchair was once used by Edward "Mush" Bauer (1906 - 1957), owner & bartender at Bauer's Hotel (now the Campbellsport Inn).

His ghost is reported to haunt that building, as listed in the Paranormal section on the Fond du Lac County page.

Costume Closet & Historic Octagon House

"Octagon House was once used to hide slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. The souls of the slaves are believed to still haunt the hidden passages and pathways. Visitors to the house have reported talking, crying, faint yelling and scratching at the walls. One reported haunting lead to the discovery of a small room that was not known of by the current owner. The house was recently put up for sale but it hasn't sold due to "unexplained events" which have caused the house to lose value and the price to drop. Reports of a little boy’s spirit roams the house."

Galloway Village contains about 2 dozen examples of buildings & businesses from over a century ago.

    

One of the exhibits in the Blakely Museum is this vast collection of American Indian arrowheads.

"See what life was like in the late 1800s. Tour this authentic village and 30-room mid-Victorian mansion boasting 4 fireplaces, Italianate details, and many pieces of original furniture. Surrounded by 25 historic buildings such as a church, photographers' shop, townhall, newspaper print shop, and one-room school. The Blakely Museum contains historical collections from Native American to present day."

Fond du Lac Lighthouse

"Climb this 40-ft tall working lighthouse for a spectacular view of Lake Winnebago and Lakeside Park. The city's signature attraction and most photographed structure in town. Built in 1933 during the Great Depression, wooden Cape Cod style painted white with a flagstone base, free telescope views. Decorated and spotlighted for the holidays every December."
